Sacred Sounds: The Hymns That Still Sing in My Soul

“Sing to Him, sing praise to Him; tell of all His wonderful acts.” —1 Chronicles 16:9

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and
hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” —Colossians 3:16

🎶 Hymns That Shape Faith and Memory

Some memories don’t come from pictures or objects but in the melodies of hymns. Growing up, hymns of faith were woven into my days because we had a piano in our home. I didn’t always understand all the words, but I knew the comfort they carried. To this day, when I hear “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” “It Is Well with My Soul,” or “In the Garden,” I’m transported back to those moments when faith through music was planted deep in my heart.

🙏 Hymns as Prayers in Seasons of Grief

In seasons of grief and loss, those hymns became more than music. They became hymns for grief and hope and prayers of comfort I couldn’t always find the strength to say. Even now, they rise up in my memory like reminders of God’s unchanging presence and His promises to carry us through suffering.

⛪ Sunday Hymn Sings and Family Memories

I will never fail you; I will never abandon you. -- Hebrews 13:5

Growing up, I attended the regular Sunday evening hymn-sing services at my church with my family. We would gather and spend an hour singing beautiful hymns as people would call out the name of a hymn they liked or that brought comfort. I remember someone in my family always requesting a lesser-known song we liked, Jesus Never Fails,” written by Arthur A. Luther in 1927. When Luther received news that his son was ill, he wrote these words that remind us that song lyrics can provide faith and healing. The lyrics to this song are as follows:

1. Earthly friends may prove untrue, doubts and fears assail;

One still loves and cares for you, one who will not fail.

2. Tho' the sky be dark and drear, fierce and strong the gale,

Just remember He is near, and He will not fail.

3. In life's dark and bitter hour love will still prevail,

Trust His everlasting pow'r—Jesus never fails.

Chorus: Jesus never fails, Jesus never fails;

Heav'n and earth may pass away, but Jesus never fails.

✝️ The Message Behind the Music

I think it was a great reminder to each of us in my family after losing my daddy that Jesus is always with us and succeeds in whatever plans he has for us. People will let us down, but Jesus leads us through the worst tragedies, the worst trauma, and helps us lift our heads and move forward.

❤️ Passing Faith Through Song

That’s the heart behind my writing, including my upcoming book, And the Sun Came Up: A True Story of Grief and Hope. I share my journey of loss, and I long for families to know that God’s promises can carry us, even when words fail, and only a sacred song of faith remains.
