Kitchen Table Lessons: Where Faith Was Passed Down

“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” —Deuteronomy 6:6–7

“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” —Psalm 34:8

🍽️ Faith Around the Family Table

When I think back to my childhood, some of the most special moments didn’t happen in a church pew; they happened around our kitchen table. It wasn’t fancy. Most nights, the seven of us were gathered around the old, cluttered, crowded table. But it was there that my family prayed over meals, shared stories, made plans, and sometimes even wrestled with the hard questions of life.

Looking back, I realize the kitchen table was one of the first places where faith became real to me. Those ordinary dinners taught me something extraordinary: faith isn’t just spoken from a pulpit, it’s lived in the rhythms of everyday life.

Even when loss and trials eventually came into my story, the roots of faith planted in those simple moments helped me find my footing when everything else felt unsteady. I learned prayer can be natural, heartfelt, and sometimes ordinary to us -- but always glorifying to our Lord.

☀️ Lessons of Faith, Love, and Laughter

That’s part of the heart behind my upcoming children's book, And the Sun Came Up: A True Story of Grief and Hope. It’s about how God’s promises hold us even in the darkest nights and how His light still shines and brings hope through the simplest memories.

That kitchen table wasn't just for meals; it was also for laughter, lessons, and love. I can still picture my daddy playfully squirting water through his teeth at Mom, causing a burst of laughter and just a little chaos. 😂 But I also remember the day I stubbornly refused to eat my supper and later hid the meat in the drawer by my chair (which, of course, Mom discovered).

Whether we celebrated joy or endured discipline, the table was always the place to be… with my family.

🕯️ The Table That Taught Us Togetherness

As I grew older and after my daddy passed away, the table became a sweet gathering place for my mom, my siblings, and me. It was still where we talked about our days, prayed before meals, and found strength in each other.

Later in life, as we became busy teenagers, it was easier to plop in front of the TV instead of sitting down together. But I am so thankful my parents gave us those precious memories, times before cell phones, streaming shows, and schedules filled with endless activities.

Jesus meant for us to live in community. For our family, the kitchen table was one of the best places that happened.

🌅 Hope Passed Down, One Meal at a Time

Family dinners can still be holy ground. Whether it's quiet prayer before supper, storytelling, or simply being present with loved ones, these are the moments that shape faith and pass it from one generation to the next.

Every bite, every prayer, every laugh around that table whispered a reminder: "Taste and see that the Lord is good."
